Torn the daughter’s bike down for paint, got it sprayed, now just waiting for it to dry to put it together :
Have matte black Trek decals on the way so I can get it stickered back up.
Then I got the wheels painted for my friend’s Tahoe:
All in all a very accomplished Sunday.

A freshly painted bike is so satisfying.

Nice!
My youngest (almost 5) was refusing to even attempt to ride a 2-wheeler, despite having very good balance and being brave on anything else with wheels. She claimed it was because the bike was pink.
The bike is a crappy 16" Huffy that I pulled off of the curb, so I called her bluff and fogged it red with a spray can. I didn’t even bother taking it apart. The only thing I taped off was the chain. I got paint all over the white tires, because the rims were pink too. She still wouldn’t ride it though.
Finally last Friday she decided it was time to send it. Within a half hour she was all over the neighborhood. I knew she could do it. She’s got the best balance of anybody in the house.

We did the strider/balance method with our daughter. I took the cranks and chain off the bike so she could learn how to balance and turn while scooting along. The day she asked for pedals was glorious. I put them back on, taught her how to use them, then set her loose. It took two pedal strokes and she was zooming around the driveway.
My son insisted on training wheels. It took a lot longer for him to make the transition, but he eventually got it.
I’ve decided that the strider method is the way to go.

Given the amount of over spray everywhere else, I’m surprised the chainring/chain/ cranks made it out so clean. I don’t even know how you pull that style crank, but I’d guess it’s a pain...

I wish you lived near me so I could pay you to paint the wheels for the Accent, lol...

I actually bought a balance bike for my oldest, after years of trying with training wheels and no success. The kid was pushing 6, and was frankly too big for the ba lance bike, but within a week of getting that, my oldest was riding a regular bike and loving it.
With the little one, she was so good with the balance bike, that I think in her mind there was no point in trying the pedal bike. It finally took more and more longer rides where she was getting tired and not able to keep up with her big sister, that finally convinced her to give the real bike a try.
I absolutely agree with you, that the strider/balance method is the way to go.

Had the kiddos out on some remote trails this weekend.

Training wheels were more of a hinderance than a help to my son. He relied on them too much. Once I took them off he figured it out and was off. Rode like 5 blocks with me running next to him cheering him on

What sort of paint sprayer did you use? Those turned out real well.

Do you have steelies or just want to add some pop to alloys? Wheels really make a difference just going from neglect to acceptable. I just took the wheel off, did a quick mask, and rattle canned it but the appearance was improved dramatically.

The bike was rattle can except the clear coat.
The wheels were sprayed using my old Devilbiss gun.

Be even more satisfying once it’s all decaled again!

Well I meant the wheels. The bike wasn’t bad for a quick and dirty mask n rattle can either.

You’re right, the right set of decals make it a lot more interesting. I had plans for a set of reflective decals for one of my builds, but I never got around to ordering the decals. It’s a two-tone fade and I figured it looks fine as-is. I’m also not riding it at night any more.
Here it is on trainer duty in my hotel room. I forget to bring a front-wheel block, so the spare bedding had to fill in.

Usually not many people can tell my rattle can jobs from my spray gun jobs #humblebrag
The wheels were sealed, then sprayed Ford black with some gunmetal flake added, then cleared.

I ordered some Trek replica decals in matte black, I think they’ll really make the paint pop.

At any rate, nice work.

Single-piece cranks require you to remove the pedals, open and remove the BB, and fish the crank through the BB shell. It really makes you appreciate three and two-piece cranks.

Mine have some curb rash, so at some point I want to replace them with something nicer, but they are a bit stained by brake dust and the like, despite being detailed...they look worse up close than in this pic, but I wouldn’t mind having a nice bronze color on it

The radial design is actually pretty good looking. That in bronze would look especially fetching with the dark gray. I know there are some special paints that are designed for this sort of application. With some grinding, prep work, and nowhere to drive, that might be a good option.

Might be! I thought Bronze would look nice...the rims are actually from a ‘98 Ford Escort :)
